The Debian package is not only an archive of files intended for installation. It is part of a larger whole and describes its relationship with other Debian packages (requisites, dependencies, conflicts, suggestions). It also provides scripts that enable the execution of commands at different stages in the package's lifecycle (installation, upgrade, removal). These data are used by the package management tools, but are not part of the packaged software; they are, within the package, what is called its “meta-information” - information about other information.
Le paquet Debian n'est pas qu'une archive de fichiers destinés à l'installation. Il s'inscrit dans un ensemble plus vaste en décrivant des relations avec les autres paquets Debian (prérequis, dépendances, conflits, suggestions). Il fournit également des scripts permettant d'exécuter des commandes lors des différentes étapes du parcours du paquet (installation, suppression, mise à jourmise à jour, suppression). Ces données sont utilisées par les outils de gestion des paquets mais ne font pas partie du logiciel empaqueté  ; elles constituent, au sein du paquet, ce que l'on appelle ses « méta-informations » (– informations portant sur les informations).

This archive contains all of the files to be extracted from the package; this is where the executable files, libraries, documentation, etc., are all stored. Packages may use different compression formats, in which case the file will be named differently for <command>xz</command>, <command>bzip2</command> or <command>gzip</command>.
<filename>data.tar.gz</filename>. Cette archive contient tous les fichiers à extraire du paquet  ; c'est là que sont stockés les exécutables, les bibliothèques, la documentation, etc. CertainLes paquets peuvent employer d'autres formats de compression différents, auquel cas le fichier sera nommé différemment (<filename>data.tar.bz2</filename> pour bzip2, <filename>data.tar.xz</filename> pour XZ)par <command>xz</command>, <command>bzip2</command> ou <command>gzip</command>.

This archive file contains all of the available meta-information, like the name and version of the package as well as some scripts to run before, during or after (un-)installation of it. Some of the meta-information allows package management tools to determine if it is possible to install or uninstall it, for example according to the list of packages already on the machine, and if files shipped have been modified locally.
<filename>control.tar.gz</filename>. Ce fichier d'archive rassemble les diverses méta-informations disponibles. Les outils de gest, comme le nom et la version desu paquets y trouvent, entre autres, le nom et la version de l'ensemble abrité, mais également certains scripts à exécuter avant, pendant ou après son installation. Certaines de ces méta-informations leur permettent de déterminer s'il est ou non possible de l'installer ou de le désinstaller, par exemple en fonction de la liste des paquets déjà présents sur la machine ou des fichiers qui ont été modifiés en local.
