The best VPNs are the ones that use free software both for the client app, and for running the services. Indeed all OpenVPN, Shadowsocks, and WireGuard VPNs are based on free software since those standards are defined by free software projects. F-Droid looks into this as part of the reviews, and marks apps with relevant Anti-Features, like the [Non-Free Network Services](https://f-droid.org/docs/Anti-Features/#NonFreeNet) mark if the server side is not free software. And there are a number of free software projects that make it a lot easier to setup and run a VPN or proxy services. Here are some that are on f-droid.org:

F-Droid is a community run free software project very much in the same spirit as Debian. The community has always aimed to provide 100% verified free software, built from source. From the beginning, there was also an interest in other ethical considerations as well, these are expressed via F-Droid's [Anti-Features](https://f-droid.org/docs/Anti-Features/). These are things tagged with _Tracking_ (contains tracking), _Ads_ (includes advertising), and _NonFreeNet_ (requires a non-free network service). The process of ensuring that the apps are 100% free software as well as tagging apps with the required Anti-Features is a manual process that many people contribute to, that is aided by quite a bit of automation. This project fits directly into this existing ecosystem. It will both quickly provide improvements in contributors' workflow based on the existing prototype, as well as experiments towards drastically improving the whole workflow of anyone working to track trackers.

F-Droid will play a major role in this project, tasked with creating a decentralized distribution system for developers to deliver apps to Android users. The impact will be an opening of the app market for Android, improving honest competition around app development. And a foundational guiding principle is to provide privacy controls to users, without locking anyone out from participating. The app distribution system will focus on a 3-party interaction between app developers, app stores and app users where every party will have freedom of choice at all points of interaction. The system will have no terms of service or even user accounts to sign up for. Developers can publish their own apps, via their own repositories. Any app store can use those repositories to provide users with a method to install those apps. And if the app is open source, it can be included in the main F-Droid.org repository, where it will be reviewed using F-Droid’s proven ethical review process. Users will be given true choice in terms of their apps and app store preferences, additional privacy guardrails and increased transparency into what is happening with their data.
